Snapdragon X Elite - STILL Waiting for Benchmarks
Snapdragon X Elite is a new ARM-based CPU for Windows PCs, which is being pushed heavily by Microsoft by making them the first Copilot+ certified products you can buy. But are they actually any good?

    why do the benchmark pc crowd not have this? it's only those iphone / macbook reviewers that got their hands on these. you know the type, soft spoken, minimalist background, videos full of useless fluff that talk a lot but doesn't say anything, no hard numbers, no real testing, at BEST some useless geekbench bs. also comparing to macs, which idgaf about, and they mac crowd probably dgaf about it either. obviously something is being hidden. thankfully i managed to find ONE guy who did actual testing. turns out this only has better battery life than AMD equivalents at near-idle usage, like browsing. on real loads, it is slower and less energy efficient. also the GPU is garbage, not even comparable to the AMD ones, and slower than even intel by a significant margin most of the time. it is slower than a steam deck for games by a lot. iirc it was a third of the frame rate in... fudge, i forgot the game. but it was at 20fps while the steam deck was 60

    We should see Intel jump to programming. (SMT on RISC/CISC with SIMD on CISC.) We were supposed to see this out of Qualcomm awhile ago. (Minus the high performance CISC ISA.) TI did this SoC awhile ago. (North bridge as chipset built in. The south bridge remains as a chipset.) Intel is currently borrowing ARM's Cortex design. big.LITTLE was SMT for power.

    40 TOPS in a 1500 dollar laptop is silly. A laptop with a low power AMD CPU and nvidia gpu can get 100 TOPS on the nvidia side and a few more on the AMD APU side. Costing half as much.

    If the product is difficult to assess, the best way to know for certain if it's good is to buy it and test it yourself - Which I think may possibly be part of their strategy.

    Also, I hate the product segmentation, when I said Qualcomm have one of the best chips (can beat the M2 MAX), I'm referring to the top SKU which is only in one Samsung laptop. They INTENTIONALLY obfuscate the product you are buying. Plus 64, Elite 78, Elite 80, and Elite 84 are the model names, intentionally hard to understand not stated on product pages. All of Qualcomm's hype was based on the Elite 84. Bait and switch. I want an Elite 84 laptop for $999 USD, not a Plus 64 one.

    We don't need a new platform that gains power efficiency at the cost of not being a widely used and or a developed platform, we want the developed platform to push more development into performance/watt and become more understanding of the importance of the user experience.

    There are about a hundred reviews out there on UA-cam and several of them have useful benchmarks. Alex Ziskind posted a good video today with various benchmarks depending on different Windows power settings and whether it's plugged in or on battery for the Samsung Book4 Edge. It explains why the other benchmarks can vary so much. However, all of the reviews find that the graphics in the Snapdragon chips aren't quite powerful enough for high-end gaming. So until the Arm chip supports a dedicated GPU gamers will avoid it. And many professionals will as well.

    • @GarrusVakarian-to2uh

      The iGPU in the Qualcomm laptop isn't enough nor stable enough to play my games from 2008, never mind high end, can't play low end. I returned the laptop. The GPU is bad. Also, the Samsung laptop is the only one with the powerful CPU. EVERY other laptop doesn't use the Elite 84 which is ridiculous. They should have released ONE or TWO SKUs, like Apple. They are intentionally lying to people by hiding which chip you are buying. Bait and switch. I was expecting a $999 Surface with the Elite 84, not the Plus 64.

    • @GarrusVakarian-to2uh
      @GarrusVakarian-to2uh 7 годин тому

      they need to double their GPU cores, just like Apple does with the M4 compared to the iPhone, sadly the iGPU in the Qualcomm laptop is just the same as the mobile phone one, just running at high clock speeds and with the fastest ram available

      @@GarrusVakarian-to2uh Really? You expected the cheapest version of the Surface Pro to contain the highest end chip? You had unrealistic expectations. Even the more expensive Pro and Laptop contain 80s. I have no idea why each manufacturer chose the chips that they did. None of them have explained. Lenovo only offers the 78 in theirs, but theirs is the best value out of all of them for the price.

    Beginning to look like a textbook launch strategy failure: way over hyped & released too soon, simply in an attempt to generate early mover sales before Strix Point & Lunar Lake turn up in Q3. Now wondering if their main USP is going to merely turn out to be c.20% better battery life vs AMD & Intel in the sub 25W (U) TDP performance class? Even in a premium ultrabook, that’s not much of a gain in exchange for emulation losses & compatibility doubts. Caveat emptor indeed.

      It wasnt. Dave was using laptops that had discrete GPUs against the Snapdragon laptop in the battery tests, leading to the x86 laptops having worse battery life than they should. He also wrongly said he hasnt seen OLED in laptops in this price range ($1000ish), which is completely wrong, as you can get OLED in laptops for $800 now.

  • @__aceofspades
    @__aceofspades 9 годин тому

    I've watched+read dozens of reviews. TLDR; SKIP IT. The Snapdragon X Elite falls far short of their marketing campaign, in reality it trades blows with Intel's outgoing Meteor Lake (Core Ultra) and AMD's Zen 4. That would seem okay at first glance, BUT Windows on Arm is still atrocious, many applications crash, have bugs, and performance issues being emulated from x86 code. Qualcomms GPU drives are completely broken for most games. The price tag of the laptops are $1100+ meanwhile the existing Intel and AMD laptops that are similar are now $800 on sale. Finally Intel and AMD both have their next gen CPUs launching soon, both are expected to surpass the Snapdragon X Elite in the area's they currently are a bit behind. Wait for Intel's Lunar Lake and AMD's Zen 5, and skip being a beta tester for Snapdragon X Elite/Windows on Arm.
